Common Rules

These general rules apply across most municipalities in the Greater Montreal area. Individual boroughs may have additional restrictions.

Vehicle Parking Only

Shelters can only be used for parking vehicles. No storage, workshops, or heating equipment allowed inside.

Full Removal Required

The entire structure — cover, metal frame, and anchors — must be completely dismantled outside the permitted period.

Shelters are generally prohibited in heritage or historic districts. Check with your borough if your property is in a designated zone.

The vast majority of municipalities do not require a permit — just follow the installation dates and placement rules. Exceptions: Sainte-Thérèse ($100 permit), Repentigny (work declaration), and L’Assomption (free certificate).

Most boroughs require a white, translucent synthetic fabric cover on a demountable metal frame. Some allow beige, grey, or light blue.
